sustainable energy systems

Even in low temperatures heat pumps are up to five times more efficient than fossil fuel boilers

An air-source heat pump extracts thermal energy from outdoor air, raises its temperature and pumps it into a building to heat the rooms inside. The process is fully reversible and some pumps are therefore also used as air conditioning systems.

Even when outside temperatures are very low, air source heat pumps can still produce up to five times as much energy as they need to run.  They require very little outdoor space and the installation costs are much lower than ground source heat pumps which require significant outdoor space.

In order to maximise the energy saving opportunities of a heat pump system, it can be beneficial to install solar panels and underfloor heating to supplement its effects. PV solar panels can be used to generate electricity to power the heat pump and thermal solar panels can be used to heat water.

Energy efficiency for the home

Heat pumps are inherently clean and reliable and traditionally use 'water to water' or 'air to air' technology. We can also supply and install 'air to water' systems that can prove to be even more efficient by utilising the best of both technologies.

With the accessibility of air as the heat source these systems offer a high degree of efficiency with a rapid return on investment when compared with other sustainable energy solutions.

Typically, for every 1kW of electrical input used to run a heat pump system, an impressive 3.8kW of free energy is output. Such savings make heat pump technology the sustainable system of choice for many homes throughout the UK. Even in the winter in the coldest corners of Britain heat pumps can effectively extract heat from the outside air making this a truly versatile and all year solution.

Lower costs, lower emissions

As well as the obvious cost savings from reduced energy bills the CO2 emissions are also vastly reduced when compared to traditional electric and gas heating systems. Further savings can also be achieved through government legislation which rewards home owners who have invested in sustainable energy solutions as their system of choice to help lower their carbon footprint.

Active is the only dedicated heat pump installer in Scotland able to design, install and maintain every element of the heating system including the heat pump, solar panels and underfloor heating.
