Even on cloudy days approximately 30% of solar radiation can be harnessed
Fitted to the pitched roof of almost any building, thermal solar panels use the sun's energy to heat the liquid inside them. This liquid then flows to a water tank where the heat is transferred to the buildings water supply. Because the water is already partially heated, less energy is needed to heat it up to the final temperature therefore reducing energy bills.
There is no need to be worried about the lack of sunshine in Scotland. According to the Sustainable Housing Design Guide for Scotland, published by Communities Scotland, we have ample sunshine to make the use of solar panels worthwhile; even on cloudy days approximately 30% of solar radiation can be usefully harnessed.
