Generating electricity from the sun's rays
Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels are devices that capture solar radiation (rays from the sun) and turn it directly into electricity which can be used for normal consumption.
Solar PV panels generate electricity when they are exposed to sunlight - they do not need direct sun - which ensures they work effectively all year round. Each solar PV panel contains cells made of two or more thin layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers of the panel, causing electricity to flow.
